If physicians want to resolve the medical liability crisis, they'll have to take actions to reduce medical injuries, according to Dr. Steven Schoenbaum and Randall R. Bovbjerg.
Focusing solely on capping malpractice awards won't be enough to solve the problem, they contend in an opinion piece in the Annals of Internal Medicine (Ann. Intern. Med. 140:51-53, 2004). "Physicians must use their abilities to make care safer and injuries rarer by developing, evaluating, and implementing safety improvements," said Dr. Schoenbaum of the Commonwealth Fund, New York.
This will involve more active work on the part of physicians to improve care and reduce harm, he added.
The American Medical Association, which touted medical liability as its top legislative priority at its December interim meeting, isn't likely to give up on capping damages as a solution.
Patient safety "is a critically important issue," AMA president Donald J. Palmisano said in an interview. To enhance patient safety, the AMA founded the National Patient Safety Foundation and strongly urges quick Senate passage of patient safety legislation, he said.
However, in advancing patient safety initiatives, physicians also need to focus on immediate solutions to America's growing medical liability crisis, he emphasized.
