SANTIAGO, CHILE -- Women whose fibroids were treated using uterine artery embolization are at significantly increased risk of future preterm delivery, malpresentation, and spontaneous abortion, compared with women who've undergone laparoscopic myomectomy, Dr. Jay Goldberg reported.
Little is known about pregnancy outcomes after uterine artery embolization (UAE). To help fill that void, Dr. Goldberg and his colleagues performed an Internet search and found 48 reported pregnancies after UAE. The researchers added two of their own cases from 2002, said Dr. Goldberg, who is director of gynecology in the division of general obstetrics and gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Data on the 50 pregnancies after UAE were compared with those from the three largest series of pregnancies studied after myomectomy. "'I chose to compare laparoscopic myomectomy because it can [also] be done on an outpatient basis," Dr. Goldberg said during a poster session at the FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
Six potential adverse outcomes were assessed: spontaneous abortion, postpartum hemorrhage, preterm delivery, cesarean delivery, malpresentation, and a baby small for gestational age.
