Not every child has a place to go after school. That was the impetus for the Youngstown Afterschool Alliance, a broad community effort shepherded by the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way. It gives some of the area's most at-risk youngsters on the city's north side a wide range of activities to spark their imagination well after sundown.
Ask Hayes Middle School Principal Carol Staten, whose school has provided the venue for the group of about 50 kids.
"Even if there's no homework," she says, "they have something to do."
From 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. there's subject-specific tutoring, self-esteem and art classes, exercise and dinner.
