For better or worse, NEOBio has been Steve Goldberg's labor of love.

But the loss of the Edison BioTechnology Center (which dissolved into BioEnteprise and Columbus-based Omeris Inc. two years ago) and its networking and advocacy functions created a void for this region's diverse and unorganized bioscience community.

"We're absolutely grassroots," says the group's acting director. "It started as a conversation. It started by recognizing a vacuum or gap [in Northeast Ohio's bioscience community] and it started by asking what should we do about it. We looked to see if there was a solution out there, and there wasn't."
