You won't see Jeff Ellis at many aquatics conferences, or writing many industry articles. Yet not since Commodore Longfellow has a man been so instrumental in the evolution of lifeguard training--and aquatics itself.

Since 1983, when Ellis & Associates started, he has innovated and upped the level of lifeguard instruction, increasing the safety of swimmers and saving millions of lives, say his many supporters. It's true that along the way Ellis has picked up his detractors. These people say he has made too many changes too quickly. And they find his company's profit motive distasteful.
