LA JOLLA, CALIF. -- Because of improved compliance, the transdermal contraceptive patch results in greater cost savings and reductions in pregnancy, compared with combination oral contraceptives, results from a novel analysis suggest.
Cost savings and benefits are greatest in younger women and those with the worst compliance during OC use, Dr. Frank Sonnenberg reported at the annual meeting of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals.
In an effort to compare for the first time the cost-effectiveness of the patch vs. OCs, Dr. Sonnenberg and his associates used a Monte Carlo simulation model to compare the two methods. Clinical efficacy and compliance data were based on a comprehensive literature review, and costs were obtained from the Medstat MarketScan health insurance claims database and industry price sources. M1 costs were expressed in 2002 dollars. Patch and OC wholesale prices were assumed identical.
For a representative insured population of women aged 15-50 years, the patch saved an average of $312 over 2 years, increased quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) by 0.0047 per woman, and avoided 4.5 unplanned ...
