SAN FRANCISCO -- Menstrual abnormalities are quite common among women with bipolar disorder, and in most cases precede diagnosis and treatment of the psychiatric disorder, Dr. Natalie L. Rasgon reported at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association.
It's likely, however, that mood-stabilizing agents are implicated in a minority of cases of menstrual abnormalities, added Dr. Rasgon of Stanford (Calif.) University.
She evaluated reproductive function in 80 women, aged 18-45, who were being treated for bipolar disorder and not taking oral contraceptives. Overall, 52 women, or 65%, reported having menstrual abnormalities.
