PHILADELPHIA -- Vestibular bands may be an anatomic risk factor for vulvovaginitis, based on a review of 150 prepubertal girls with vaginitis at a single center.
"The frequency of the association suggests a possible causal link" between vestibular bands and vaginitis, Dr. Julia A. DeBellis said while presenting a poster at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology
The anatomic feature of banding probably makes pooling of fluid within the vagina more likely, thereby exacerbating the environmental factors that can cause vaginitis, Dr. DeBellis said in an interview with this newspaper. Vulvovaginitis is the most common gynecologic problem among young girls, and it can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor hygiene or type of clothing.
