SAN DIEGO -- Young women who face a high risk of osteoporosis due to endocrine disorders need more estrogen than they can receive through a standard 0.625-mg dose of conjugated equine estrogen or standard doses of oral contraceptives, several endocrinologists said at the annual meeting of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
Instead, Dr. Barbara M. Lippe and Dr. David Cook recommend a 0.1-mg estrogen patch in combination with low-dose progesterone for young women with such conditions as Turner's syndrome or growth hormone deficiency.
Some members of the public have become confused by results of the Women's Health Initiative that debunked the belief that combination hormone replacement therapy can prevent heart disease and Alzheimer's disease. Physicians need to emphasize that hormone replacement still has a very important role for some women.
