PHILADELPHIA -- Women who underwent feminizing genitoplasty had clitoral sensory impairment in a pilot review of six patients.
The findings show that the impact of genital surgery on clitoral sensation and sexual function requires further study, Dr. Naomi Crouch said at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.
Feminizing genitoplasty for clitoral reduction is often performed on girls with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Among the six women aged 17-31 in the current study, five had undergone surgery about 15 years previously when they were girls or adolescents. The sixth woman had undergone surgery about 18 months before the current assessment, she said.
Clitoral sensation was evaluated in these women using a GenitoSensory Analyzer, a vaginal and clitoral probe that can be adjusted to reach various temperatures to assess thermal sensitivity. Vibratory sensation was also assessed with a similar probe, and light ...
