MONTREAL -- Ultrasound measurement of a thin endometrium does not rule out pathology in premenopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding, results of a retrospective study suggest.
"We were trying to find a measurement to be able to say, if the endometrium is less than this thickness, then you don't even have to bother doing a sonohysterogram, but what we found was that if you do that, you are probably going to miss some things," study investigator Dr. Daniel Breitkopf said at a meeting sponsored by the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.
The study was based on the well-accepted assumption that endometrial thickness measurements of at least 5 mm can predict pathology in postmenopausal women. "Similar data for premenopausal women are limited because of the varying thicknesses of the endometrium depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle," said Dr. Breitkopf of the University of Texas, Galveston.
