MONTREAL -- Three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound can be used as a screening tool to evaluate abnormal uterine bleeding in premenopausal women, thereby avoiding the need for more invasive 3-D transvaginal sonohysterography in about one-third of cases, one study found.
"Although sonohysterography is generally accepted as a safe procedure, the instillation of fluid can cause cramping and discomfort, so if we can use a method to get the same information but without having to instill fluid, that would be more advantageous," Dr. Charles Read said at a meeting sponsored by the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.
Dr. Read of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University, Chicago, explained that power Doppler is particularly good at identifying feeder vessels in polyps and fibroids and can thus confirm the pathology.
