Dr. Abigail Hagler deplores the unfairness of public perceptions of physicians ("We Are So Bad," Letters, July 1, 2003, p. 7). She apparently feels sorry for herself and other physicians because of the mistrust and lack of respect for members of our profession and blames these problems in large part on the impression that physicians are wealthy, arrogant, and profligate consumers.
Most physicians are still respected and treated with fondness and respect by most of our patients. Dr. Hagler, I think, confined her observations to the physician section of the hospital parking lot and the "pill hill" area of housing, so she missed the reality of most of the world.
The general public sees physicians driving ostentatious cars such as Lincolns and Mercedes. We tend ...
