There is an urgent need for increased awareness of interstitial cystitis among gynecologists, so I was pleased to see the topic covered in Women's Health Adviser (May 1, 2003, p. 26).
Gynecologists should include the bladder in the evaluation of women with chronic pelvic pain and suspect interstitial cystitis (IC), as it is among the four most common causes of chronic pelvic pain. Recent findings in women with chronic pain showed that more than 95% had IC and more than 70% had IC and endometriosis concomitantly (JSLS 6[4]:311-14, 2002).
For early diagnosis, all screening tools for IC should be considered. The Pelvic Pain and Urgency/Frequency (PUF) questionnaire is especially useful to identify IC. This questionnaire can be completed by patients in just a few minutes in a gynecologist's office. This ...
