MONTREAL -- A renal pelvic anterior-posterior diameter of less than 7 mm after 32 weeks' gestation is predictive of normal postnatal renal function.
That finding emerged from a study presented by Dr. Anthony Odibo at a meeting sponsored by the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.
"This measurement is highly predictive of normal outcome," said Dr. Odibo, who is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
Mild pyelectasis, commonly defined as an anterior-posterior (AP) diameter of more than 4 mm between 18 and 30 weeks' gestation, suggests an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities, particularly Down syndrome, as well as the possibility of impaired postnatal renal function.
The establishment of more specific AP measurements and their prognostic value has been controversial.
"The management of mild pyelectasis prenatally remains a challenge. Measurement thresholds requiring postnatal follow-up are conflicting, and false positives are high, causing maternal anxiety," ...
