As I got deeper into motorcycling, I became more and more interested in attending one of the major motorcycle rallies that take place each year. Since I live in New York, neither Bike Week at Daytona Beach in Florida or Sturgis in South Dakota were ever serious options because of the distances involved. Fortunately for me, I had one other viable alternative. The third major motorcycle rally in the United States takes place at Laconia in New Hampshire, which is a reasonable day's journey from my home. Thus, one day in early June I got on my bike and headed north to check out the sites and sounds during bike week in Laconia, and to discover the unique riding experiences New Hampshire has to offer.
Besides being third-largest, Laconia Motorcycle Rally and Race Week has the distinction of being the oldest. The gathering out of which the current rally can trace its roots first took place in 1917, when a group of Boston-area motorcyclists assembled for what was called a Gypsy Tour.
