John "Buddy" Howard isn't your typical research analyst. And his firm isn't a typical research boutique. Howard started his career as a generalist with Carolina Securities Corp., a regional brokerage firm. There he often wrote about companies that were not widely followed--at times he was the only analyst on the beat. This left him with the notion that smaller, yet viable, publicly-traded companies needed a boost from someone who could provide in-depth research and analysis. "I saw that there was a market for public companies to retain my services to publish investor relations reports on a quarterly basis," he says.
