Dr. Alf Andreassen and Lt. General Ken Minihan had been on a plane bound for New York City the morning of September 11th. Their plane was turned around in mid-flight, although those aboard knew little of what had prompted its return. "We found ourselves on the roof of National Airport's parking structure watching as a plane collided with the Pentagon," says Andreassen. Minihan's son was working on that side of the building that day, but survived. Their friend, former Director of the CIA, James Woolsey, had a son that was pushed from the second tower of the Trade Center moments before it collapsed.
While many Americans have similar stories of disasters narrowly avoided that day, these men were spurred into action by their experiences. "We took the attacks very personally and were wondering what we could do and what would be useful," says Minihan. "But we are too old to be air raid wardens or EMTs."
