Investment Thesis:
We are maintaining our Buy rating on Southern Company following the company's release of fourth-quarter earnings. Our $35.00 price target on Southern, which is based on the dividend discount model, assumes a 3.5% long-term sustainable dividend growth rate. Taking next year's estimated dividend of $1.41 divided by 4.0% (the estimated required return on Southern calculated using the capital asset pricing model less Southern's sustainable dividend growth rate of 3.5%) results in a price target of $35.00 (unchanged).
