The Pacific Northwest is looking greener these days, and it isn't just the region's trademark forests that's changing the view--it's the color of money.
Being close to the action makes all the difference to D.A. Davidson & Co., a regional-boutique firm with institutional research offices located in Portland, Oregon. D.A. Davidson follows companies that are headquartered in the Northwest quadrant of the U.S., as well as industries that call the five-state region home. "We like to focus on the industries whose hub of activity is in our geographic market," says Director of Institutional Research, John Rogers. "We think that gives us an advantage over people operating outside of this region."
Analyst Steve Chercover follows forest products, one of the Northwest's paramount industries. He also feels that the firm's proximity adds value to its research. "Being in the trees--seeing the logging trucks and the direct impact on an industry that is so important in this part of the world--that gives us an opportunity to capture a little bit more color than someone outside the region," he says.
D.A. Davidson's insight and ability to pick up on trends early in the game has earned lofty recognition for its analysts. In 2001, The Wall Street Journal ranked Director John Rogers and Analyst William Frerichs in the top three for their stock-picking skills. Rogers notes that the most significant portion of D.A.
