Many Demanding New Viagra Drug
In a song written today, the "v" in love would stand for Viagra.
New Mexican men are joining others around the country in clamoring for the hot new drug to combat impotence, a treatment trumpeted in news stories and broadcasts nationwide.
And they want the prescription even though many insurance plans don't cover it and patients have to shell out about $10 per pill.
"I've had men say they don't really care if it's covered (by insurance) or not," said Dr. Donald Kettwich, an Albuquerque urologist.
First, a caution: Viagra is not a love potion for anybody in the mood. While the doctors are willing to let most of their patients with true impotence try the drug, they warn that it's not meant for recreation.
It's not an aphrodisiac. It won't increase your sex drive. It's not intended to enhance performance for men who already can get an erection.
For those in need, the drug has runaway appeal.
"Virtually every patient comes in asking for Viagra," said David McCulloch, a physician's assistant who runs an impotence clinic at Albuquerque's Veterans Administration Medical Center.
