New ORLEANS -- Facial fat transfers for patients with HIV lipodystrophy restore their spirits as well as their appearances, Dr. Richard N. Sherman said at a dermatology update sponsored by Tulane University.
Patients who are treated for HIV often suffer from an emaciated appearance that is "a modern scarlet letter"; a sign of advanced HIV that's obvious to others, said Dr. Sherman of Tulane University.
Nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors are likely responsible for the fat wasting, while protease inhibitors are suspected of causing metabolic anomalies and central fat hypertrophy in HIV patients.
