New Mexicans Say Tragedy Was 'Freak'
New Mexicans involved in racing called the deaths of three fans during the U.S. 500 in Michigan on Sunday a freak occurrence, but they say fans should realize there's always a small chance something like that will happen.
When Adrian Fernandez lost control of his car and hit the wall at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, the right-front wheel flew off his CART car. The wheel popped up into the air and landed eight to 10 rows into the stands. It killed three and injured six.
''The wreck wasn't that bad,'' said Rick Galles, general manager of Nienhouse Motorsports, an Indy Racing League team. ''That was a freak deal.''
''It's unfortunate these people were killed, but it's probably lucky that more weren't killed,'' IRL driver Jim Guthrie said. ''Fans have kind of taken a risk when they buy a ticket. It's an assumed risk. It's like going to a baseball game. You could get hit in the head with a foul ball and die.''
