Gov. Picks Environment Secretary.(New Mexico)

Geologist and former environmental consultant Peter Maggiore was appointed Monday as New Mexico's new Environment Department secretary.
Maggiore, 41, succeeds his former boss, Mark Weidler, who died in a car crash July 16 at age 67.
Gov. Gary Johnson made the appointment, which is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
"The circumstances under which I've been asked to serve have been absolutely tragic," Maggiore said.
Maggiore, who until last month directed the department's environmental protection division, has been criticized in the past by department employees for siding with industry. But he has been viewed favorably by environmental activists, including one who has been extensively involved in state government issues.
"He's always been a straight shooter," said Gregory Green, an environmental lobbyist in Santa Fe who has dealt with Maggiore in the past. "I'm glad he's there."
