It's argued that crops genetically modified to resist attack by pests or disease could result in less wastage, greater yields, more economical production and ultimately lower-cost food. The nutritional value and shelf life of food could also be increased, and crops modified to resist pests and disease could reduce the need for chemical sprays.
Arguments against genetic modification include concerns about a lack of knowledge of the potential effects on human health, biodiversity and other environmental considerations, and the fact that increasing production of food won't necessarily result in its equal distribution--many countries with starving people in fact have surplus food supplies.
