Online consultations between specialists and referring physicians led to a change in treatment in 90% of cases, according to the findings of a retrospective study.
In 5% of cases, the online consultation led to a change in the patient's diagnosis, reported Dr. Joseph C. Kvedar and his colleagues at Partners Telemedicine, the Boston-based technology firm that operates the Partners Online Specialty Consultations service at http://econsults.partners.org.
Dr. Kvedar and his colleagues reviewed 79 patient cases for which consultations occurred between the patient's primary physician and specialists at Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Among the patients, 90% were being initially diagnosed with cancer.
