SEATTLE -- Young women and teens who douche after sex are twice as likely to have bacterial vaginosis as those who douche at other times, Dr. Tina Simpson said at the annual meeting of the Society for Adolescent Medicine.
Of 213 females who douched, 94 (44%) tested positive for bacterial vaginosis in this survey of 14- to 21-year-olds, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. The douching practice tied to the highest risk was douching after intercourse, reported by 45% of the subjects, said Dr. Simpson of the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
