NEW ORLEANS -- Young age, nonwhite race, a prodding partner, and current relationship problems are key signs that a woman undergoing sterilization will later regret her decision, Dr. Cher P. Moseman reported at the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Women aged 25 and younger were almost twice as likely as those aged 26-40 to request sterilization reversal in a prospective study of 42 women, aged 18-40, who requested evaluation for reversal of a prior bilateral tubal ligation, and 45 women in the same age range who weren't seeking reversal.
About 70% of those in the younger age group at the time of sterilization sought such an evaluation, compared with 37% in the older age group, Dr. Moseman reported in a poster presentation at the meeting.
Women were enrolled in the study at the time they requested evaluation for reversal. The questionnaire they completed on enrollment requested information about demographic and relationship characteristics at the time of their decision to have a tubal ligation, and at the present time.
