SEATTLE -- The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis among young women appears to be about 27%, according to a survey of 1,938 young women who were entering the military.
The prevalence among those who were sexually experienced was 28%, but even among those who had never had sexual intercourse the prevalence was 18%, Dr. Sophia Yen said at the annual meeting of the Society for Adolescent Medicine.
The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis was lower in those women who used hormonal contraception, compared with those who did not (25% vs. 3 1%).
This study is the first report of the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis in young women who were not sampled because they were being seen in a clinic, and, therefore, probably represents the general population better than have previous studies, said Dr. Yen of the department of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco.
"This is the largest sample of non--sexually experienced women examined for bacterial vaginosis by fourfold," she added.
