2000 Women's water polo makes its debut at the Sydney Olympic Games.

2000 Tom Griffiths develops the "The 5-Minute Scanning Strategy" to help lifeguards stay alert on the job. Released on videotape, it is based on physiological and psychological task-involved research. Paragon Aquatics develops a special chair, Griff's Guard Station, to accommodate implementation of the innovative strategy.

2000 The YMCA's "Water Fitness for Health" program and manual are released in conjunction with instructor training programs in water fitness and active older adult fitness.

2001 Poseidon Technologies' underwater, computer-enhanced, drowning-detection system is installed in a U.S. pool for the first time, in St. Cloud, Minn.

2001 At age 15 years 9 months, Michael Phelps becomes the youngest male in history to break a swimming world record, lowering the mark in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:54.92 at the Phillips 66 Spring Nationals.
