1960 The Royal Life Saving Society becomes the first organization to teach the direct method (mouth to mouth) of artificial respiration. Also in 1960, a Norwegian toymaker shows the first manikin for teaching mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The result is Resusci Anne, used by millions -- but not in water. So Resusci Junior is introduced, a "boy" of 5 who can sink to the bottom of the pool or float.
EARLY 1960s Increased tourism spurs the motel industry to add pools, which introduces more middle-class families to pools.
1961 The Red Cross introduces the Swim and Stay Fit program to promote physical fitness nationwide.
1961 FMC Corp. wins a patent to use cyanuric acid. in pools as a chlorine stabilizer.
