1956 SUMMER OLYMPICS
In Melbourne, Australia, Pat McCormick (left) becomes the first diver -- male or female -- to win gold medals in both the platform and springboard events in consecutive Olympics, duplicating her performances in Helsinki, Finland, in 1952.
Also at the Melbourne Games, just weeks after the Soviet Union invades Hungary to stem anti-communist forces, the countries meet in perhaps the most famous water polo match ever played. Now known as the "Blood in the Water match, the referee ends it with less than a minute left, fearing the bloody fight in the pool will spread to the stands. Hungary (below), ahead 4-0, is declared the winner and goes on to win the gold medal.
