HISTORY OF USFILTER'S STRANCO PRODUCTS AQUATIC DIVISION
In 1997, Stranco was acquired by USFilter, which was founded in 1968. Today, this modest company from central Illinois has become an integral part of a multinational group of companies whose only focus is on the treatment of water.
Stranco's foundation and future were built by the leadership of one man, Frank Strand. Frank was the first to apply Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) technology to the control of chlorine. Unbeknownst to him, his early efforts in swimming pool chemistry control would go on to spawn the use of ORP control across an entire water treatment industry.
In those early days there were no written health codes, few reference materials for pool operators, no industry associations, and no distribution of pool products. In short there was no pool industry as we know it today. Frank was instrumental in the formation of many of today's respected pool institutions. He was one of the founders of National Pool & Spa Institute (NSPI) and a member of the initial Technical Council. This council drafted the first set of guidelines for the operation of public pools, which was to become the basis for most state health codes in place today. He coauthored the first pool operators handbook published in 1969, which is still in use today, and was the basis for today's CPO and AFO textbooks.
