Ex-Mayor Says Abuse Rumors 'Garbage'
The Albuquerque Police Department is looking into an allegation that police covered up a domestic abuse incident involving former Mayor Martin Chavez.
It is the second time in three years police have investigated the allegation. The earlier investigation turned up no evidence that the police department ever responded to a domestic abuse call at Chavez's home.
The former mayor and his wife said this investigation would produce the same result.
Police spokesman Tony Herrera said Wednesday the Internal Affairs Unit began its current investigation in the past month and has not turned up anything to back up the allegation, which Chavez acknowledges has been the subject of rumors for years.
Chavez, now the Democratic candidate for governor, said Thursday that rumors of a domestic violence incident and police cover-up are "garbage."
