Rio Rancho Plant Included in Cuts
Intel is planning voluntary layoffs at its Rio Rancho and other manufacturing plants, company officials confirmed Thursday.
Beginning next week, the giant chipmaker will offer severance packages to Rio Rancho employees as part of an ongoing plan to reduce its worldwide work force by 3,000, Intel officials said.
Intel officials would not say how many positions might be affected in Rio Rancho, where Intel employs 6,500. But they said no one is being forced to accept the severance package.
Company managers will meet with employees here next week to reveal details of the plan, said Terry McDermott, a spokesman for the Rio Rancho plant.
"This is part of the ongoing efforts (to reduce Intel's work force) that was announced after the Q-1 (first quarter) earnings report," McDermott said. "The severance is being offered strategically in certain parts of the company. It's companywide. But it's not being offered to everyone."
