GAITHERSBURG, MD. -- An expert panel has supported the approval of omalizumab, an injectable monoclonal antibody that blocks immunoglobulin E as a treatment for people aged 12-64 years with moderate to severe allergic asthma.
In two pivotal trials in mote than 1,000 patients with allergic asthma who were not controlled on inhaled steroids, the use of omalizumab as add-on therapy significantly lowered the number of asthma exacerbations, compared with placebo. The reduction occurred during a stable steroid phase and during a steroid reduction phase. The treatment was well tolerated, but there was some concern about a possibly higher rate of malignancies in treated patients.
