The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved lamotrigine (Lamictal) tablets for the long-term maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder, drug maker GlaxoSmithKline announced. The FDA specifically approved lamotrigine for the maintenance treatment of adults with bipolar I disorder to delay the time to occurrence of mood episodes in patients treated for acute mood episodes with standard therapy. The last long-term treatment for bipolar disorder approved by the FDA was Lithium for maintenance of bipolar I disorder, according to GlaxoSmithKline.
