KEY LARGO, FLA. -- The differential diagnosis for a patient with vulvar pain should go beyond common causes such as bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, or trichomonas infections.
Clinicians should also consider lichen planus, genital human papiliomavirus infection, pudendal nerve dysfunction, and vestibulitis, Dr. Guy I. Benrubi said at an ob.gyn. update sponsored by the University of Miami.
"Not everything we see is what it looks like. Vaginitis is a problem. We teach students and they leave medical school thinking that vaginitis is the universe, and there is nothing else. But it's a small part of the pie," he said.
