Caspofungin is as effective as the tried and true--but potentially toxic--amphotericin B for treating invasive candidiasis, said Dr. Jorge Mora-Duarte of Neeman-Instituto Costarricense de Investigaciones Clinicas and Hospital Mexico, Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social, San Jose, Costa Rica, and his colleagues.
An alternative treatment for invasive candidiasis is needed. Amphotericin B has been used for decades but is limited by its potentially toxic side effects. Its safer counterpart, fluconazole, has a role in treating candidemia, but it doesn't kill non-Candida albicans species. Caspofungin targets the fungal cell wall.
