WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration's process for approving new drugs needs to be changed, according to a report from the Health and Human Services Department's Office of Inspector General.
The report, issued in late March, drew on interviews with agency officials, pharmaceutical company representatives, scientific experts, and consumer advocates. It said that FDA reviewers and the companies that sponsor the applications had confidence in the decisions the agency makes regarding new drugs. However, the report noted several problems that need addressing.
