Premiums for health coverage in the California Public Employee Retirement System will rise between 16.7 and 18.4 percent, on average, for 2004, the 1.2-million-member system announced June 18.
The substantial hike nevertheless represents about half the premium increase that health plans had proposed to CalPERS at the beginning of negotiations, system officials said in a June 18 teleconference with reporters. Premiums proposed were in the neighborhood of 30 percent.
