My question has to do with Ron Swoboda, who played for the Mets. I understand that as a rookie, Swoboda hit homers in his first four official at-bats. Is this correct?
Armando Ruiz
Flushing, N.Y.
It never happened, although Swoboda did hit 19 home runs in his rookie season while playing in 112 games with the Mets in 1965.
No players ever hit homers in their first four official at-bats in the major leagues, although through 2002, there have been 83 players (35 in the American League and 48 in the National League) who homered in their first official at-bat in the majors. Swoboda was not one of these players.
I was reading the article about Eddie Murray in the June Baseball Digest and noticed the chart for players hitting a home run from both sides of the plate in the most games, with no mention of Carlos Baerga.
Didn't Baerga (now with the Diamondbacks) hit a home run from both sides of the plate in at least five games?
