You say your kids are looking for a few good books to read this summer?
No problem. And, despite what you may have heard, there are plenty of other good stories out there besides the adventures of that ubiquitous wizard-in-training.
Sure, Harry Potter -- whose latest adventure officially hit bookstores last weekend -- is the big fish in this summer's youth literature pond. But here, courtesy of several area book lovers, are some titles to pitch to your children when they're ready to take a break from all of those mystical doings at Hogwarts.
First to third grades
Picture books always are popular among children, says Julie Doyle, librarian at Paradise Professional Development School.
One book Doyle recommends for young readers is "Excuse Me!" by Las Vegas author Lisa Kopelke.
"It's about a frog that's always burping, and he never says excuse me," Doyle says. "It's hysterically funny, and he's sort of ostracized. And, the illustrations carry it along."
"America the Beautiful," based on work by Katharine Lee Bates and illustrated by Wendell Minor, is an example of what seems to be a post-terrorist attack trend of American-themed picture books, Doyle says.
Debbie McGuire, youth services coordinator for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, calls "Giggle, Giggle, Quack" by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin a funny tale of "a good duck gone bad" and a popular book among children at the...
