Cryotherapy nearly halved size of uterine fibroids in pilot study. (Menorrhagia Relieved in 14 of 15 Women).
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. -- Freezing uterine fibroids nearly halved fibroid size and eliminated fibroid symptoms in nearly all of 20 patients at a 6-month follow-up in a pilot trial.
Cryomyolysis was performed using the Her Option system, which is approved for global ablation of the endometrium to treat menorrhagia but not for the treatment of fibroids. Her Option could offer an alternative to myomectomy if further clinical evaluations document that the treatment can produce long-term benefits in treating fibroids, Dr. Enrico Zupi reported at an international congress on uterine fibroids.
The current study focused on 20 subserosal or intramural myomas, which ranged in size from 4 to 10 cm. The fibroids were surgically accessible via laparoscopy. Patients were not given GnRH agonists to reduce fibroid size before treatment, he said at the meeting sponsored by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
