LITTLE ROCK, ARK. -- Heavier women with gestational diabetes mellitus may be more likely to require insulin therapy Denise Hopkins, Pharm.D., said at the annual meeting of the North American Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group.
But data from 91 women diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy suggest that even heavy women may be able to control their blood sugar levels with diet alone, said Dr. Hopkins of the University of Arkansas, Little Rock.
But these retrospective study results may be confounded by the fact that an unknown proportion of women in whom diabetes is first detected in the third trimester may actually have had previously undiagnosed type 2 diabetes, noted Dr. Hopkins, who is also a certified diabetes educator.
Fifty-eight percent of patients were obese (body mass index of at least 30), 22% were overweight (BMI 25-29.9), 19% were normal weight (BMI 18.524.9), and just one woman was underweight ...
