Rationale for Use

A proprietary preparation of the unsaponifiable residues of avocado and soy oils, mixed in a 1:2 ratio, is a popular European treatment for osteoarthritis.

This product (Piascledine 300, manufactured by Pharmascience Laboratories) has been shown in animal and in vitro studies to reduce the harmful effects of interleukin-1[beta] on articular chondrocyte metabolism, possibly through enhanced expression of transforming growth factor-[beta]. It also increases production of plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, which may block the plasmin cascade that leads to destructive metalloprotease activation and promotes articular-matrix repair mechanisms. The product also stimulates collagen synthesis and inhibits production of interleukins 6 and 8...
