Background
Based on autopsy data, adrenal masses occur in at least 3% of adults who are over 50 years old. An increasing number of incidentally found adrenal masses are being detected as abdominal imaging technology is improved and utilized. Most adrenal masses cause no medical problems, but a minority are malignant or cause significant hormonal illness. A recent National Institutes of Health consensus conference outlined the evaluation of these adrenal "incidentalomas."
Conclusions
Based on autopsy series, the prevalence of clinically inapparent adrenal masses is less than 1% in persons under 30 years of age, but increases to 7% in those 70 years and older. Clinical reports show a higher number of these lesions in women, probably...
