Vermont Is for Lovers

In your April issue (Vol. 13, #2), you mention Vermont as a great vacation spot to go tie the knot. A wonderful idea, indeed! February 2003 was actually the three-year anniversary of the passage of Vermont's great civil-union legislation. What a great way to celebrate!

However ... many people don't realize this, but Vermont civil unions do not travel. You cannot have a civil union ceremony in Vermont and then go back home again and expect it to stick. Unlike marriage, civil unions do not hold that pull. I'm sorry, did someone say something about the separation of church and state?!

What Wuornos Deserved

I have to comment on Victoria Brownworth's assumption (Vol. 13, #2) that Aileen Wuornos got fair treatment. ... I seriously doubt it. Who's to know if she was crazy"; maybe [she acted in] self-defense. Any one of us would be treated the same way, and most women are, especially in rape cases; it's you that's "crazy," not the perpetrator. ... That there are more lesbians on death row doesn't surprise me; it's an outcome of this insane hetero hatred against us. Just because someone is abused doesn't make them insane, [but] if she had been raped, she was still very traumatized. No one can declare someone insane while or after being traumatized ... but they do, and we all pay for it, and the rapists keep rolling along. A person needs trustworthy attorneys, and mental-health experts--that's the hard part, and also a must.
