The majority of standardized test scores for Albuquerque's charter schools were below the national average this year.
Of 29 grades tested in 12 charter schools, 16 composite scores were below the national average, 12 were above and one was not reported. The national average is the 50th percentile.
Most of those low scores, however, were at the three new charter schools that target students from high poverty neighborhoods or those who are at risk for dropping out.
"We have a lot of students who have academic deficits," said Los Puentes Charter School principal Greta Roskom said. The scores were "not a surprise to us, and that's the population that we target."…
