CL King & Associates, one of the oldest firms founded and headed by a woman -- Candace King Weir -- encourages analyst freedom in establishing the parameters of their coverage universes. This makes for a lot of generalization among the analysts, who pick stocks based on fundamentals.

CL King's Director of Research, Gary M. Giblen believes that being a generalist is a plus. Giblen, who has served as managing director for several large firms, and has been ranked No. 1 in both the II and Greenwich surveys in the retailing sector, says he came to CL King for the chance to perform independent and action-oriented idea research in a far broader universe of stocks.

"At conventional firms you have a set universe based on Institutional Investor voting and the interests of the investment banking," he explains. "The idea of making money for institutional clients by picking good stocks or even being willing to say 'sell' has virtually disappeared from the Street.
